Topic:  Matt Gregory, FOSS4G Conference, Portland   Matt attended the FOSS4g Open Source GIS and web mapping conference in Portland, September 8-13, 2014. Mike Bostock gave the keynote address, he designs interactive graphics for the New York Times and wrote a javascript library used for webmapping (D3.js), which was everywhere.  Also many applications of PostGIS. Other database “Mongo DB” DB backends that does not need SQL.

He described several new python libraries: “FIONA”, “RASTERIO”, “SHAPELY”. Also python library to replace GDAL, which is not ‘pythonic’ enough.  ESRI also had open source project to display, a data translator. Lots of ESRI bashing going on, of course. The conference was live streamed. Bernie Jenny won 2 awards.

He described some local level high resolution remote sensing projects that are being developed. May be collecting imagery at daily 5 m coverage (PlanetLabs).

Announcements:  Paula got a permanent GIS job with the Forest Service in California and is moving next month.
